Burdekin Christian College is a small independent school situated in the township of Ayr. Ayr is located approximately 100 kilometres south of Townsville in North Queensland. Ayr is the centre of the Burdekin District. The Burdekin District is known for its plentiful supply of underground water (liquid gold). Sugar cane is the main primary industry but many other crops are increasingly being grown. Ayr has a population of approximately 8 000 and the Burdekin District has a population of around 16 000. Burdekin Christian College commenced in 1982. It is situated at the corner of Melbourne and Chippendale Streets. Because of the availability of underground water its grounds are always green. The College is a member of Independent Schools Qld and Christian Schools Australia Queensland. The College has both a school and an early learning child care centre. The school has a population of over 80. It has four classes (P-1), (2-3), (4-5) and (6-7). Besides employing teachers it employs a learning support teacher, a teacher librarian and a number of teaching assistants. The early learning child care centre is licensed for 31 students. The licence enables it to enrol 10 toddlers (15 months-3years) and 21 kindy/pre-prep (3 years to school age). It operates 50 weeks a year from 7.00am to 6.00pm.
